Lite case study

Connecting personal trainers with trainees

Finding personal trainers without gym affiliation can be really difficult and it usually require a long term subscription. No platform to book sessions for specific training purposes.

How might we remove this barrier while keeping trainees and trainers safe?

My role

Product Designer. I worked with another UX designer, Maja Eriksson to plan and conduct user interviews, testing, product concept and design. I was also responsible for the pitch deck to the stakeholders and took part in the presentation. I designed the final UI screens presented in this case study.

Trime is an app that simplifies the complete process of Personal Training from finding, booking, comparing trainers, paying and later on following up. The users are trainers and trainees.

The brief

"Discover opportunity areas for trainers and design new experience based on discovered opportunities. Design features that helps trainees find qualified personal trainers listed on the app"

Trime app was growing and needed to discover new ways to improve the user experience of their app. They wanted to introduce new features that will help increase their user base, solve real user problems and improve the experience offered by their app.

We were tasked to come up with new product ideas that can help achieve this goal, including a prototype and a functional developed app.

How we did it

Using the design thinking framework, we ran a 4 weeks sprint to help us discover ideas and come up with solutions and features that will help us achieve the goal.

Week 1 - Empathise

Competitive analysis

The main purpose was to get inspired but also to see what already exists in the marked and receive an understanding of possible ways we could either proceed with or take into consideration before digging deeper into the project.

The apps within the competitive analysis consisted of the following:
Fitsw, Aaptiv, FitnessTrainer US and Freeletics HIIT Fitness coach.

Our main takeaways from this exercise was that it was difficult to find platforms that focused on the community aspect as most proved to be solely intended for independent workouts.

None of them offers direct connection between trainers and trainees, and they were all subcription based.

Surveys and user interviews

We sent out surveys understand the experience behind booking trainings and user preferences. We also wanted to know the pain points to solve.

80% of 27 responders said they don’t use personal trainers because of the long term commitment required.

Quotes from Interviews

"It’s hard to find qualified trainers that can help manage injury without going through a specialist or gym. I sometimes just need tips and professional advice from a trainer, not the full trainer package"

Once off training without long term commitment.
"I'd like to see features that allows me to buy once off training. I don't mind if it's within a group or individual. I already have a gym membership but the best trainers aren't connected to my gym"

Personal trainers are usually forced to work with with local gyms.
“At the moment its really hard to find people, you need to have a network of people. Also a competition between trainers. Another factor is that you have to advertise yourself.”

Week 2 - Define

Personas

To futher strengthen empathy and help focus on the users, we defined the users with 2 personas, one for trainees and one for trainers.

HMWs

We understood the problems to solve, we knew the users and their painpoints. To kick start our ideation process, we formulated 3 HMW questions.

Week 3 - Ideate

Strategising features

Before proceeding with sketching, we had to map out a strategy and make sense of which functions to focus on. In addition to this we worked on, in this stage, to structurize the order in which the functions should occur. This allowed us to have a clear overview of our content.

User flow & wireframes

These wireframes are the end results of several rounds of sketching and reiterating on the sketches to get the best possible Information Architecture for the website.

Week 4 - Prototype & usability tests

Wireframe tests

The tests were carried out in small tasks. The purpose was to test the idea and usability of the features. We used Maze to perform these tests remotely.

Tests Summary:

-Users were not sure what the app can do for them from start screen. There was no guide on how to find a trainer for specific needs based on their goals and location

-It was unclear how the booking process works. There were too many steps before completing a booking

-There was no way for users to know if a trainer is certified to help manage their injury unless thy book them first.

The solution

We designed a new feature in Trime that allows trainers to create custom schedules that can be bought by trainers. Trainees can find trainers near them based on their location and their preferences. Trainees can also prebook sessions based on trainer’s preset availability.

#1. Choice between finding a trainer and consultations

For users who wants to simply find a trainer for consultations such as injury management or dietary plans, they can easily begin their journey as soon as the app loads, just as it is for those looking for personal trainer for training purposes.

#2. Personalised trainer categories

Users can now choose which type of trainer fits their needs best and can tailor their search according to this need

#3. Find trainers near you

Based on their location, it’s now possible to find trainers in the area, and view their profiles, prices and availability. Trainees can see if the trainer is qualified, verified and comments/reviews from other people that have trained with them in the past.

#4. Trainer deals

Trainers can create deals within the app that can be purchased by trainees. These deals can be individual trainings or in groups. This solution eliminates the gyms as third party and required memberships for trainees.
